Ten years transformed him into an obese faun with a mania for women, gambling, and other people's posessions. His father named him Farouk, which means "On Who Knows Right from Wrong." At sixteen he was the hope of an independent Egypt, a handsome, godlike young man who, the fellahin believed, would lead them into a time of peace and plenty.
